Small Class A Motorhomes – The Ultimate Buying Handbook

Small Class A Motorhomes

*We may earn a commission for purchases made using our links. Please see our disclosure to learn more.

Small class A motorhomes are built on a heavy-duty chassis, so there are several small class A motorhomes that have a “bus-like” look to them because of their big picture windows and flat front end. These motorhomes sit higher than other types of motorhomes, so they have a commanding view of the road, unparalleled storage, lots of headroom, lots of amenities and a whole lot of wind resistance.

Class A motorhomes typically aren’t classified as small, but there are a few manufacturers who have built sub-30′-rigs. However, these class A motorhomes aren’t as maneuverable as class B motorhomes. But small class A motorhomes are still nimble enough where you can get in and out of most campgrounds and are typically small enough to fit in a double-parking spot.

What is a Small Class A Motorhome?

Class A motorhomes are the most expensive and largest motorhomes on the market, and they happen to be the type of motorhome most commonly found. If you’ve ever seen a boxy, big bus-style motorhome, then you know what a class A motorhome is.

They are built with a heavy-duty frame that sits on a motor vehicle chassis, a commercial truck chassis, or a commercial bus chassis. These motorhomes also have room to move around in when traveling and have a minimum of two slide-outs to increase the living space when stopped at a campsite.

They can fit anywhere between two to four people comfortably because they have a bed in the rear of the rig and couches that can fold into beds.

If you’re looking for luxury and quality, then you should go with a class A motorhome because they offer more storage space and living space.

Benefits

  • Lots of storage
  • Smooth ride
  • Better visibility
  • More towing and power capability
  • Roomy interior and ample space

Class B Motorhomes

Class B motorhomes are smaller and more compact than a class A motorhome. They actually look more like longer and larger vans, which leads to their name of “camper van.” Class B motorhomes are much taller and larger than a regular full-sized van to allow for room to live and sleep. However, due to the size of class B motorhomes, they are cheaper than both class A and C motorhomes but offer fewer features.

Benefits

  • Better fuel economy
  • Takes up one parking space
  • Maneuverable and mobile
  • Cost-friendly

Class C Motorhomes

Class C motorhomes are mid-sized recreational vehicles that are usually built on top of a large truck or van chassis and have an over-the-cab area for sleeping. They are often called mini motorhomes because they are more compact versions of class A motorhomes. They are also typically lightweight and have better gas mileage and allow for plenty of storage space and amenities.

Benefits

  • Easier to drive because of its size
  • Living area is accessible while driving
  • Less space to heat/cool
  • Entrance is closer to the ground
  • Easier to navigate
  • Has more sleeping area

Big Little Guys

Big Class A motorhomes are the kings of the road. Small Class A motorhomes give you many of the same benefits but without the drawbacks. One of the greatest things about driving a compact Class A motorhome is the visibility – it’s great! Small Class A motorhomes provide you with the same picturesque view of the road as a big Class A motorhomes. This is because you sit up higher in Class A motorhomes, so you get a better view of the road.

Small Class A motorhomes typically have wrap-around, big windows to provide you with an unobstructed 180-degree view with big side mirrors to help you see what’s behind you.

Class A motorhomes tend to have less space for sleeping than similarly sized Class C motorhomes because they don’t have a cab-over bunk. However, there are a few models that have a pull-down bunk in the front of the rig.

Class A motorhomes are also taller than Class C motorhomes, which is good and bad. It’s bad because taller motorhomes have issues with low hanging powerlines and branches, but that same extra height provides you with more headspace and storage.

Even small Class A motorhomes have more storage and head space than classic C motorhomes.

Powerful and Small

A big benefit of purchasing a small Class A motorhome is that it has a heavy-duty chassis, a more powerful engine, and a more capable transmission than Class C rigs. If you want to have the ability to haul a tow vehicle, this style of Class A motorhome will work better than a Class C.

Luxury

Small Class A motorhomes also offer a superior level of livability and comfort than similarly sized Class C rigs. Unless you want a high-end Class C motorhome or a small diesel pusher, a gas-powered Class A motorhome is the top of the line.

This is because of the extra room that class A motorhomes offer. While you have more sleeping area in a class C, you get much more room to live in with a class A.

Who Manufactures Small Class A Motorhomes?

The most popular brands that manufacture small Class A motorhomes are:

All of these brands offer some type of small class A motorhome. Winnebago and Thor are the most common brands to offer these class A motorhomes. But the brand that you end up going with is ultimately a personal choice.

Conclusion

Class A motorhomes aren’t typically classified as small, but there are a few manufacturers that make small class A motorhomes. They are like their bigger counterparts but are easier to maneuver and can fit in double parking spots. Plus, they’re more comfortable than class C motorhomes that are similar in size because small class A motorhomes have more living space and storage.

If you want the same comfort of a class A motorhome but don’t want the size of one, then look into purchasing small class A motorhomes. While you could go with a Class C motorhome, small class A motorhomes have more room, better towing power, and better visibility.
